We announce the presentation and participation of the “Utopia Project Archive” of the Athens School of Fine Arts in the
12th International Conference of the Utopian Studies Society (Europe)
During the conference, there will be an ongoing presentation of the “Utopia Project Archive” housed outside the Main Auditorium of the Central University Campus and will include video, a small book exhibit, and selected artworks.

The Utopian Studies Society is an interdisciplinary society that aims to co-ordinate and encourage the diverse work currently taking place on the subject of utopianism. Its members include people researching literature, philosophy, sociology, history, architecture, politics and anthropology.
The Society was established in 1988 by a group of British scholars, following an international conference on utopianism at New Lanark. It was re-launched, following the "Millennium of Utopias" conference at the University of East Anglia in June 1999.
The special focus of the 12th conference of the Society concerns the intersection between the question of Utopia, crisis, and justice. This year, the conference is hosted by the University of Cyprus and will be held at the University’s central campus.

As part of the last days of the Utopia Project Archive 2006 - 2010
at the Institute for Contemporary Greek Art, in Athens, Greece,
Jim Hobbs, along with Maria Glyka and Vassilis Vlastaras,
will create a temporary installation of works that play off of each other,
focusing on themes of utopias.

At the center of this will be the first (looped) screening of Utopia/Dystopia,
a short 16mm film, shot on location while Jim Hobbs was a guest artist
at Utopia & Nature 2010 in Reythmno, Crete.

Filmed in black & white and colour, single frame by single frame,
the film denies the idealistic and bucolic view of the Greek island
and instead frantically shifts between positive and negative imagery
of barbed wire, fences, animal bones, dead plants, transmission towers,
broken bells, abandoned architecture, and disused portals.

Upon Hobbs' film projection, Vassilis Vlastaras will be playing live
with moving images and pictures creating a link with past Utopias
while among the sound of the 16mm projector and old radio frequencies
Maria Glyka will be singing along Utopias texts.

A discussion about food in utopias

“There is tenderness only in the coarsest demand: that no-one shall go hungry anymore”

This phrase from Adorno’s Minima Oralia can be considered as emblematic of the way the
question of food appears in utopian thought. The satisfaction of the basic needs of all the
members of utopian societies, the recognition of the importance of the pleasures of the body,
collective meals as mechanisms that strengthen the social bond are among
the dominant motifs of utopian texts.
Around the table of Utopia Project, we are going to talk about the question of alimentation
in the utopian tradition, the contemporary practices of collective kitchens, and how
the table obeys the limitations set by the group that uses it, consenting to the object’s meaning.

we will be presenting a refresher of the 1st 2 issues of Shytstem
through the medium of the karaoke.
This is part of our current process of making Shytstem a more useable tool.

At 6pm on Wednesday 7th January we will be linking up our own
review with the Utopia project in a second broadcast.
We will be speaking with Vassilis Vlastaras and Maria Glyka.

SHYTSTEM
We have been working on a series of (nearly daily) online video broadcasts,
details of which can be found on our blog at www.tinyurl.com/shytstem.
The purpose of these broadcasts has been to review the cardboard box
publication project Shytstem which took place between 2006 and 2008.

The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis collective invites you to the archive presentation taking place at the “Sotiria” Hospital in Athens. The installation runs until the 10th of October, 2010. During the course of the archive presentation, there will be a series of performances and events.
The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis collective explores the different aspects of the historical record and collective memory through a contemporary experience at the Sotiria hospital. Taking into account the history of the hospital, the Collective has worked on the production of a new audio-visual archive that oscillates between the limits of memory and the contradictions of the historical narrative.

EXPERIMENTAL AND INQUIRING APPLICATIONS IN CONTEMPORARY ART AND PRACTICE

This year’s workshop investigates the relationship between contemporary artistic practices and the natural environment. Art is often seen and spoken in terms of being environmental, critical and subversive. For the past decades, the natural environment has seen radical changes and has been at the forefront of many contemporary art projects. What is the relationship between art and nature? During the workshop, we will consider different ideas in contemporary art making and theory to examine from varying perspectives the question of art and nature.

shelf - An exhibition/exercise in 5th Whitstable Biennale 2010

Originally, this exhibition/exercise took place in London March, 2010, with over 50 international artists participating. Each artist had been asked to create a work which deals with, rests on, engages with, speaks about, or actually is, a shelf. For the Whitstable Bienalle, the organizers of this project have expanded it to include the work from various artists in the Whitstable area. The end result will be a new installation where all the artworks will be forced into very tight confines, creating one large conglomerate work with a variety of microcosms within.

Αrt in a hospital is one of the most interesting programmes of applying visual arts in public places. Especially in Europe art has in many ways entered the hospitals. But the exhibition in the “Sotiria” hospital is not just an art presentation in the sensitive area of a hospital. The “Sotiria” hospital is a place laden with history and has been the theatre of many stories. It was the first public sanatorium in Greece (1903), created as a result of the 19th century concept of charity. For half a century it functioned as a place of – voluntary or involuntary – confinement for patients suffering of tuberculosis. It has been a typical case of heterotopia, i.e. a place where society used to isolate a specific group of people in a state of crisis – according to that society. During the German Occupation the “Sotiria” hospital was once more connected to the history of the country, through executions of resistance fighters and prisoners’ escapes.
This place is at the same time a museum as well as a social place serving a practical purpose even today, since it functions as a general hospital. The audience of this exhibition does not just consist of art lovers, but of the patients themselves, as well as of the hospital’s staff.
The art project is going to be realized between June and October 2010 in the “Sotiria” hospital. It is organized by the Athens School of Fine Arts, by the hospital’s administration and the associations of staff and patients.
It is a thematic exhibition – the central axis being the history of the hospital – including painting, sculpture, video arts and installations, which will be presented in the open spaces of the hospital, in the auditorium, as well as in a neoclassical building dating from 1915, assigned for this purpose. Co-organizer of this project is the Athens School of Fine Arts, many of the teachers and students of which participate in the project, whereas various work groups of artists have been created in its context.
During the almost four months lasting event there will be a parallel programme, in the context of which there will be various congresses concerning the architectural meaning of the place, visual art and music events.
This is one of the few times that a visual art event opens up so intensely not only to society, but, what is more, to such a sensitive place as a hospital.

Various artists have been asked to create a work which deals with, rests on, engages with, speaks about, or actually is, a shelf. There are 45 artists represented within these pages, with each artist submitting a responsive text and image in regards to their ideas about "shelf".

I am unpacking my library. Yes, I am. The books are not yet on the shelves, not yet touched by the mild boredom of order. I cannot march up and down their ranks to pass them in review before a friendly audience. You need not fear any of that. Instead, I must ask you to join me in the disorder of crates that have been wrenched open, the air saturated with the dust of volumes that are seeing daylight again after two years of darkness, so that you may be ready to share with me a bit of the mood – it is certainly not an elegiac mood, but, rather, one of anticipation –

Οι Δρόμοι Ζωής είναι μια αποκλειστικά εθελοντική οργάνωση που ασχολείται με την στήριξη κοινωνικά αποκλεισμένων παιδιών και των οικογενειών τους, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία ζουν στο Γκάζι και τις γύρω γειτονιές.

Την έκθεση επιμελείται εθελοντικά η ιστορικός τέχνης κ. Λένα Κοκκίνη.

The exhibition Nees Morfes 50 years later chronicles the activities of an art gallery within the Greek art scene and its involvement in the aesthetic developments of this past half century. It is an effort to re-capitulate the main historical phases of Greek art’s recent past, whilst continuing our dialogue with the viewers and the artists.
The chronological flow of events and the works that are being exhibited allow for a concise overview of the aesthetic pursuits from yesterday to date, which could give rise to profitable discussions, in order to affirm or
re-evaluate the accuracy of our choices these last decades.
The fiftieth birthday of a gallery, beyond its celebratory purpose, offers the opportunity to critically re-assess the role of private art spaces in the formulation of the cultural idiom of the country.

UTOPIA & YOUTH
EXPERIMENTATION AND RESEARCH IN CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC PRACTICES

Within the context of the generalised youth protests that rocked Greece last December – also gaining widespread international recognition – this year’s workshop focuses on the relation between utopian discourse and youth. A historical study of youth movements reveals that youth has always functioned as a nodal point of resistance against the socio-political status quo of the day, advancing radical political transformation and social change. This is not to say, however, that all youth mobilization has a progressive orientation; on the contrary, it has also been lured by utopias of exclusion such as the Nazi Utopia of Racial Purity. Hence, the workshop will deal in depth with youth creativity and youth violence, will examine the role of youth subcultures in social and political mobilization, focusing on both the creative as well as the destructive dimensions of youth activism.
