Our contemporary societies are constructed around flows: flows of citizens(physical movements or between classes, occupations etc), flows of information, of data, of capital, of symbols, images and sounds.
Every time we move or make a movement we can leave traces with or without our knowledge. Either experiencing the above or observing it, movements of people, cars, devices, data refer to something that is the opposite of static. The location might change geospatially, civilly or descriptively.
This mobility can leave traces both horizontally (e.g. movements between groups) and vertically (higher or lower scale) and define the identity of the subjects, of their spaces and their "investigators".
For some it's about controlling the movements that form the identity and for others it's about researching the diversity and the sources that create it.
To the limits of “togetherness”
Kostis Stafylakis

The idol of this age is community. As compensation for the hardness and staleness of our life, this idea has compressed all sweetness into mawkishness, tenderness into weakness, and flexibility into the loss of dignity. Molded by this idea, what is repressed pushes the phantom of an overstrained heart under a gruesome cruelness. An immeasurable chilling of human relationships by mechanical, commercial, and political abstractions conditions an immeasurable reaction in the ideal of a shimmering community overflowing through all of its supporters.[1]
Helmuth Plessner, The limits of community: A critique of social radicalism, 1924.

During the last years the Greek society experiences a revival of collectivities, collective forms of protest, self-organization and participation projects. Especially in the past one and a half years one observes an intense collectivization of life. Interpretations of its causes abound: the growing deficit of representation in the experienced parliamentary democracy, the need of supplementing the forced isolation of a difficult everyday life – supplements for the alienating pace of life, the demolition-loss of familiar spaces of gatherings/meetings/socialization, the loss of working space, the recession of entertainment and the repulsion towards forms of entertainment/relief that dominated over decades; and the Dionysian seduction of the collective protest, the glamour of “autogestion”, the ideological dominance of intellectual schemes for a post-anarchical micro-utopian radicalism, the ritual anathema upon the recent political history, the devaluation of parliamentarism, the “alternative way of life” culture with its oriental extremities verging on and submerging in paths of “wisdom”, the alternative vacations trend posed as anti-consumerism, the abrupt proliferation of electronic social networks, and the “exit” towards rural life. more herevassilis vlastarashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04223787291541819365noreply@blogger.comAmfissa 331 00, Greece38.5276679 22.378152738.5152459 22.3584117 38.5400899 22.3978937tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18434118.post-69100713401349519882012-09-24T21:01:00.003+03:002012-09-24T21:11:08.049+03:00red line

Nicosia, Cyprus

We announce the presentation and participation of the “Utopia Project Archive” of the Athens School of Fine Arts in the
12th International Conference of the Utopian Studies Society (Europe)
During the conference, there will be an ongoing presentation of the “Utopia Project Archive” housed outside the Main Auditorium of the Central University Campus and will include video, a small book exhibit, and selected artworks.

The Utopian Studies Society is an interdisciplinary society that aims to co-ordinate and encourage the diverse work currently taking place on the subject of utopianism. Its members include people researching literature, philosophy, sociology, history, architecture, politics and anthropology.
The Society was established in 1988 by a group of British scholars, following an international conference on utopianism at New Lanark. It was re-launched, following the "Millennium of Utopias" conference at the University of East Anglia in June 1999.
The special focus of the 12th conference of the Society concerns the intersection between the question of Utopia, crisis, and justice. This year, the conference is hosted by the University of Cyprus and will be held at the University’s central campus.
As part of the last days of the Utopia Project Archive 2006 - 2010
at the Institute for Contemporary Greek Art, in Athens, Greece,
Jim Hobbs, along with Maria Glyka and Vassilis Vlastaras,
will create a temporary installation of works that play off of each other,
focusing on themes of utopias.

At the center of this will be the first (looped) screening of Utopia/Dystopia,
a short 16mm film, shot on location while Jim Hobbs was a guest artist
at Utopia & Nature 2010 in Reythmno, Crete.

Filmed in black & white and colour, single frame by single frame,
the film denies the idealistic and bucolic view of the Greek island
and instead frantically shifts between positive and negative imagery
of barbed wire, fences, animal bones, dead plants, transmission towers,
broken bells, abandoned architecture, and disused portals.

Upon Hobbs' film projection, Vassilis Vlastaras will be playing live
with moving images and pictures creating a link with past Utopias
while among the sound of the 16mm projector and old radio frequencies
Maria Glyka will be singing along Utopias texts.vassilis vlastarashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04223787291541819365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18434118.post-67046946333787220212011-01-22T01:11:00.000+02:002011-02-03T01:15:00.162+02:00utopia project archive 2006 - 2010Utopian appetites
“There is tenderness only in the coarsest demand: that no-one shall go hungry anymore”

This phrase from Adorno’s Minima Oralia can be considered as emblematic of the way the
question of food appears in utopian thought. The satisfaction of the basic needs of all the
members of utopian societies, the recognition of the importance of the pleasures of the body,
collective meals as mechanisms that strengthen the social bond are among
the dominant motifs of utopian texts.
Around the table of Utopia Project, we are going to talk about the question of alimentation
in the utopian tradition, the contemporary practices of collective kitchens, and how
the table obeys the limitations set by the group that uses it, consenting to the object’s meaning.
Art is often seen and spoken in terms of being environmental, critical and subversive. For the past decades, the natural environment has seen radical changes and has been at the forefront of many contemporary art projects. What is the relationship between art and nature? Each artist had been asked to create a work which deals with, rests on, engages with, speaks about, or actually is, a shelf. For the Whitstable Bienalle, the organizers of this project have expanded it to include the work from various artists in the Whitstable area. The end result will be a new installation where all the artworks will be forced into very tight confines, creating one large conglomerate work with a variety of microcosms within.

Jim Hobbs, assisted by John Butterworth, including

Thorbjorn Andersen, Maya Attoun, Jenny baines, John Bremner, Metod Blejec, Riley Brewster, Zoe Brown, Clare Bryan, John Butterworth, Juliana Cerqueria Leite, Stuart Chubb, Louise Colbourne, Gillian Daniell, Caroline de Lannoy, Faith Edwards, Sean Edwards, Jamie George, Maria Glyka, Jenny Heishman, David Henningham, Jim Hobbs, Max Holdaway, Caroline Isgar, Tess Jaray, James Keith, Liane Lang, Tom Lomax, J T Lowen, Denis Masi, Morgan Mckeehan, Sara Mclaren, Suzanne Mooney, Rie Nakajima, Martin Newth, Flore Nove-Josserand, Sion Parkinson, Lisa Peachey, Ellie Reid, Hephzibah Rendle-Short, Alex Robbins, Marie Roux, Huan Kuan Sai, Martina Schmucker, Henrietta Simpson, Wendy Smith, Finaly Taylor, Anu Turunen, Vassilis Vlastaras, Ruo Bing Wang, Richard Whitby, Aethan Wills, Gary Woodley plus other invited artists from the Whitstable area

Rear of 5 Harbour Street (entrance in Sea Street) Whitstable CT5 1RG

Saturday June 19th and Sunday June 20th

Publication information: www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1272698vassilis vlastarashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04223787291541819365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18434118.post-79985538578682534442010-06-01T00:25:00.005+03:002010-06-11T00:08:33.125+03:00The “Sotiria” project - Memory and disease in visual arts discourseDuration of the exhibition: from Friday, June 18th until Sunday, October 3rd 2010

Opening hours: Tuesday – Friday: 11:00 – 14:00 & 19:00 – 22:00
Saturday – Sunday: 11:00 – 14:00

Sotiria: Athens General Hospital for Lung Diseases
Address: 152, Mesogeion av.
Information: tel. 210 7751489, 210 7472902-4, www.culturenow.gr
Metro station: Katehaki

Opening: Friday, June 18th, at 8 p.m.

Αrt in a hospital is one of the most interesting programmes of applying visual arts in public places. Especially in Europe art has in many ways entered the hospitals. But the exhibition in the “Sotiria” hospital is not just an art presentation in the sensitive area of a hospital. The “Sotiria” hospital is a place laden with history and has been the theatre of many stories. It was the first public sanatorium in Greece (1903), created as a result of the 19th century concept of charity. For half a century it functioned as a place of – voluntary or involuntary – confinement for patients suffering of tuberculosis. It has been a typical case of heterotopia, i.e. a place where society used to isolate a specific group of people in a state of crisis – according to that society. During the German Occupation the “Sotiria” hospital was once more connected to the history of the country, through executions of resistance fighters and prisoners’ escapes.
This place is at the same time a museum as well as a social place serving a practical purpose even today, since it functions as a general hospital. The audience of this exhibition does not just consist of art lovers, but of the patients themselves, as well as of the hospital’s staff.
The art project is going to be realized between June and October 2010 in the “Sotiria” hospital. It is organized by the Athens School of Fine Arts, by the hospital’s administration and the associations of staff and patients.
It is a thematic exhibition – the central axis being the history of the hospital – including painting, sculpture, video arts and installations, which will be presented in the open spaces of the hospital, in the auditorium, as well as in a neoclassical building dating from 1915, assigned for this purpose. Co-organizer of this project is the Athens School of Fine Arts, many of the teachers and students of which participate in the project, whereas various work groups of artists have been created in its context.
During the almost four months lasting event there will be a parallel programme, in the context of which there will be various congresses concerning the architectural meaning of the place, visual art and music events.
This is one of the few times that a visual art event opens up so intensely not only to society, but, what is more, to such a sensitive place as a hospital.

mycobacterium tuberculosis
Participating:
Adamis Michalis, Aggeliki Avgitidou, Antonis Stoantzikis,Argyrou Michalis, Caesar Vrettos, Christina Spanou, Dimitra Politi, Dimitris Rentoumis, Elena Prifti, Fanis Vlastaras, Fotini Kalle, Katerina Gkoutziouli, Maria Glyka, Polianna Vlati, Victoria Karvouni, Vassilis Vlastaras.vassilis vlastarashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04223787291541819365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18434118.post-70563032487651146642010-03-15T00:40:00.007+02:002010-10-02T16:34:40.217+03:00shelf - An exhibition/exercise organised by Jim Hobbs. Exhibition: Saturday 27 and Sanday 28 March 2010, 11:00 - 18:00
Unit B4S, 4th Floor
Copeland Industrial Park
133 Copeland Road, Peckam, SE 15 3SN

Reception: From 18:30 at The Rye Hotel on Saturday 27 March.
31 Pecham Rye, Peckam, London, SE 15 3NX.

Plus the launch of Shelf, an illustrated catalogue of all participating artists, with an essay by Sion Parkinson - here for a preview.

This catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition/exercise, "shelf", taking place in London, March 27-28th, 2010. A historical study of youth movements reveals that youth has always functioned as a nodal point of resistance against the socio-political status quo of the day, advancing radical political transformation and social change. This is not to say, however, that all youth mobilization has a progressive orientation; on the contrary, it has also been lured by utopias of exclusion such as the Nazi Utopia of Racial Purity. Hence, the workshop will deal in depth with youth creativity and youth violence, will examine the role of youth subcultures in social and political mobilization, focusing on both the creative as well as the destructive dimensions of youth activism.

6th Painting Studio ASFA (Athens School of Fine Arts)

Organizer-Facilitators: Vassilis Vlastaras and Maria Glykavassilis vlastarashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04223787291541819365noreply@blogger.com
